One of the anecdotes the report details concerns the hiring of Bill Stasior, a former Amazon search executive who arrived at Apple to oversee Siri about a year of Steve Jobs's death, the man who brought Siri to Apple.
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, actually did the honours of unveiling the HomePod - but not before taking a swipe at the competition, saying that none of them "have quite nailed it yet". Make sure to let Siri know when you like a song so it can learn your taste.
HomePod conveys a flawless listening audio quality whether put on a rack, in a corner or at the alcove in the room. A person familiar with HomePod's development said it would have the same level of encryption as Siri and HomeKit.
HomePod is Apple's venture into the digital assistant/home theater realm, but is it worth the wait? It will tell you the joke because Siri is inside it.
"You asked (a lot)". But that is not the primary responsibility of the HomePod. Making the most of it will require a subscription to Apple's own music streaming service, which runs $10 to $15 per month and has attracted 27 million subscribers so far.
According to the company, the Siri-powered smart speaker is created to "reinvent home music", much in the way that the iPod did for portable music. The mids sound muffled.
In a blog post Technalysis Research founder Bob O'Donnell depicted Apple's latest product news as an affirmation that the company has not fallen behind competitors and is working to take advantage of potentially exciting new technologies.
"You might like Bose, they might like Sonos", he continued. They are not the kind of speakers on which you can play Symphony No 9 and experience your heart fill with joy. Six microphones allow the speaker to hear audio commands from across the room, even when loud music is playing, and Apple has expanded Siri's vocabulary and intelligence to allow it to respond to a wide variety of music-related queries.
"The similarly-sized Sonos Play:1 only packs one tweeter, which it rounds out with two amps and a mid-woofer", adds Wills.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is the king of expensive - granted, the firm makes premium devices that deserve premium pricing; yet, I can't but wonder how much margin is enough margin. Now, with consumers using voice to interact with devices more frequently, "nice to have" has become "must have".
Samsung is testing a similar feature for its Android-powered phones.
Alexa - just like the Amazon website - is sprawling and a little untidy around the edges. It will be priced at $349 with White and Space Grey color options.
Google Assistant probably has the edge over Siri when it comes to understanding what you're getting at and what your requests mean, thanks to its superior natural language processing. "How their data is being used is a key area moving forward where both Google and Amazon are, for now, less legitimate given their core business models".
But in all likelihood none of this matters in the case of the HomePod, not right now.
As for how this works in the real-world, you can use the Apple HomePod, Amazon Echo, and Google Home for nearly the same things.
