Gun control debate revived in wake of congressman being shot

Republican baseball practice gunman 'had list of names'

"He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours", reads a statement provided Thursday by MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the medical facility now treating Scalise.

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

Although the weather in Washington looks headed toward a near-flawless summer night, an obvious and immovable shadow is being cast over Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game - a tradition that began more than a century ago.

Scalise is said to be somewhat responding to medical staff and family, according to the doctors. Although "infection is a significant risk", the physician said, "an excellent recovery is a good possibility".

We don't want to see this incident cited as representative of any partisan political point of view that the shooter appeared to share.

MedSTAR hospital has not issued an update on Scalise's condition last night when they said he was in critical but stable condition.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) has undergone three surgeries following Wednesday's shooting that occurred during practice for a Congressional charity baseball game.

"In Washington, we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said. Hodgkinson was eventually killed by Capitol police.

Scalise's office released a statement from his wife, Jennifer, thanking people for their support and praising the two Capitol Police officers, Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who were injured while bringing down the gunman.

The Congressman had been awake initially but, due to severe bleeding, had gone into shock by the time he arrived at the hospital.

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.

"I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", Democrat Cedric Richmond said. He remains in critical condition.

President Trump is not planning to attend the game because of security concerns, the White House said Wednesday.
