Senate steers toward showdown vote next week on health bill

Senator Chris Murphy one of many Democratic senators to speak out for open debate on the Senate health bill

What the upcoming vote to replace the ACA could mean for small business community

"We should have been able to see [the bill] weeks ago", Lee said, "if we were going to be voting on it next week".

Andrew Gillum blasted Senate Republicans Tuesday for "hiding" behind its Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill, an "immoral disaster" which is being written largely behind closed doors and without Democrat input. Majority leader Mitch McConnell says others will have every chance to read the bill and propose amendments before a final vote is taken.

Republicans are rushing toward a vote next week in hopes of passing legislation before the July 4 recess.

If the Senate bill is similar to the House version, it would only allow people with pre-existing conditions to keep coverage if there are no lapses between insurance policies; otherwise, insurers would be allowed to deny them coverage, erasing a key provision of the ACA.

During negotiations over the House bill earlier this year, White House officials consistently predicted when Republicans would vote. So they're going to push a bill through knowing that the House nearly certainly won't adopt it as is and therefore they'll need to go back to the drawing board anyway in a conference committee. On Monday night, Senate Democrats held the floor to protest the GOP's secrecy in drafting such a significant piece of legislation.

Meanwhile, Democrats have become so upset with the Republican lack of transparency in the health care bill discussions that they used a parliamentary maneuver Tuesday morning to block all committees from convening that afternoon.

If the Senate approves a bill next week, it still has more hurdles to go.

Reuters reports #Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected calls by Democrats to refer the healthcare legislation to the Senate committees for hearing.

He has said the party leadership will unveil a "discussion draft" of the bill on Thursday. If Corker wanted this to be a more open process, with more public hearings, he could play a significant role in making that happen.

The Senate must have the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office provide a cost estimate for the measure 28 hours before a vote can take place.

"Nobody really has a finalized health care bill".

How do these ideas compare with the House GOP's health care bill?

Democrats are increasingly anxious that McConnell will jam the bill through the Senate with little debate, limiting their chance to scrutinize the bill and whip up opposition against it.

Other Republicans are excited by the bill. Sen.

Here's one of Pence's tweets from 2010, when President Obama was working to pass the Affordable Care Act.

"I think there is a whole lot of ambiguity, which gives everyone some concern that there isn't enough time to review", Meadows said.

Later, he simply chortled when asked if he was confident the measure would pass, a victory that would elude him if just three of the 52 GOP senators voted no.

GOP senators have been meeting privately to address disputes over cutting Medicaid, limiting insurance requirements and revamping tax credits.

"It's not too late to abandon this plan to jam Trumpcare through Congress", Washington's senior senator said. "Their leader, Sen. (Chuck) Schumer (D-New York) made it very clear that they didn't want to be part of this process".
