In Facebook Patrick Fitch M.D of Clarksville Ophthalmology has answers the few eye safety questions for peoples. Mission Valley Eye Center/ Ronan Eye Clinic has generously sponsored the purchase of more than 200 pairs of solar eclipse glasses that we will have available that day for safe viewing.

Exactly what are eclipse glasses?

According to the American Optometric Association, it is safe to look directly at the sun only during the totality of the eclipse, when the moon entirely blocks the sun's face. Eclipse glasses are made of mylar.

"I think it's a really interesting idea [to have an eclipse party]", said Morgan Harrison, tasting room manager at RagApple Lassie.

Eclipses are also a chance to reflect upon humanity's progress, Motl said, noting that some of the first people to predict eclipse were ancient Mayans, who took measurements over hundreds of years. There was no certification for eclipse glasses in 1918, and one of the recommended ways to view the phenomenon then was through smoked glass.

Binoculars and telescopes are not safe to use for the whole eclipse, unless the filters are bought for the eyepieces.

Sprint and Verizon Wireless, which is the nation's largest cellphone company, say recent network enhancements have reduced the need for deployment of temporary cell towers at large-scale events.

And if you just want to stay close to home, you can still experience the partial eclipse by using a pinhole projector, your hands, or even by viewing the shadows cast by a tree!

With total lunar eclipses, the area coverage is far greater and totality lasts far longer. On Monday, August 21st, the moon will pass between the sun and the earth, blotting out the sun over a huge swath of the country for a couple minutes in the middle of the day.

Bradley and Todd Peabody, a clinical associate professor in the IU School of Optometry, discuss eclipse viewing safety in a video. Remember, Indianapolis is not in the path of totality so it's important to keep your glasses on the whole time if you are viewing from Indy.

Q: Can I watch the eclipse online?

If you decide to buy eclipse glasses elsewhere, there are ways to spot a fake. Naturally, though, there are already sketchy retailers out there peddling counterfit eclipse-watching gear, that might not appropriately protect your vision. You can attempt to be one of those lucky people by entering the contest through Airbnb's mobile app.
