Genesee County is not immune from one of the worst outbreaks of flu in NY on record.

"With it being so high in our county people are starting to see that urgency to come in and get their flu shot", said Maria Mata, patient representative for Austin Public Health. "A cough is something we see all the time", she said.

While only children's deaths are reported, this season's flu strain has been hitting senior residents hardest. So far this year, California alone is reporting that 32 people under the age of 65 have died of the flu since October.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, most children will get better from the flu without needing to go to the doctor. State health officials say Nebraska along with the rest of the nation is experiencing a severe flu season.

It may seem late in the game to get a flu shot, but the virus is more widespread and more deadly than usual this season.

"Additionally, the vaccination may potentially reduce flu symptoms if you do get the flu", Yaley wrote.

"It's frustrating to hear some people say they're not getting the shot because they think it's not "worth it", said Keiser. "When there are high levels of the H3N2 strain circulating, there tends to be more severe illness and a higher number of deaths".

The virus is contracted and spread nearly exactly like the human flu.

"It's a worse-than-average flu season but still within the range of what we've seen in previous years", Madoff said.

The number of Texans dying from a flu-related cause has more than doubled.

"Part of the reports we get is the state receives information from health systems and doctors".

He says while a cold and flu do share some of the same symptoms including a sore throat, runny nose and headache, Dr. Morledge says the differences are significant.

"Being vaccinated and practicing good hygiene not only protects you, it helps protect the vulnerable populations around you", Keiser said.
