At the beginning of every year, the entertainment industry and movie buffs from around the globe would turn their eyes upon the Academy Awards. But he wasn't nominated for an Oscar. And to think that they gave it a handful of Razzies instead when they should all be bowing down in reverence to the ephemeral magic of this movie.
After yesterday's announcement of Oscar nominations, it is clear that Oscars 2018 can be historic for more than just one reason. Usually a stodgier affair than the Golden Globes, which was an open and ecstatic celebration of #MeToo this year, the Oscars may be more reserved, but some form of tribute to the witch hunt will undoubtedly be paid. Those upset by a snub should also share who they feel does not belong. The previous Academy president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, went out of her way to recruit a more diverse new round of voters. Important steps were taken with the #OscarsSoWhite campaign in 2015. The film is about a mother who, when the police in her town fail to find a suspect in her daughter's murder, purchases three billboards to call public attention to the unsolved crime. Progress is great. But there are so many firsts left. As per usual, the lineup is full of shocking snubs and pleasant surprises. Or the absence of German leading candidate, "In the Fade", as best foreign film.
No Jane in Best Documentary Feature.
"People need to have help talking about these things", he says.
Sun. Feb. 25: "Phantom Thread", "Lady Bird", "Get Out" and "Three Billboards". The fact that he's been put in a position where he belongs makes me very happy...
This year was a major year for film.
But beyond the front runners, this year was monumental in its display of minorities throughout its nominee list.
Morrison, whose other credits include the forthcoming Black Panther, is the first woman ever to receive a nomination in this category. "What's the opposite of the Sunken Place?" tweeted a joyful Peele shortly after the announcements. Vox reported that Christopher Plummer, nominated for best supporting actor for "All the Money in the World", is the oldest nominee for acting at age 88.
Christopher Nolan FINALLY gets into Best Director for Dunkirk. Dunkirk scored eight and lead-up-awards-favorite Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri got seven. The film is animated by a racialist outlook, and followed to its logical conclusions, leads viewers into right-wing territory. Greta Gerwig got a nod for her directing debut with "Lady Bird", but best director and best picture could come down to two men. The other two to do so were Warren Beatty with Heaven Can Wait (1978) and James L. Brooks for Terms of Endearment (1983).
#1 Puteri Gunung Ledang (2004) The fantasy film was the first Malaysian movie submitted to the 77th Academy Awards.
Plus, if his screenplay wins, and it's a dandy, he becomes the first black to win that category. Wonder Woman wasn't simply a movie, it was a cultural event - a historic movement that brought about change in a year that was defined by how we buried the past and embraced the future. Problems arise only when followers use gender and ethnicity to grade quality. While superhero movies are never a lock for Oscar nods, quite a few viewers were disappointed by the complete lack of attention, even in the technical categories. Oh, right, maybe Denzel.
Interracial romantic comedy The Big Sick won a screenplay nomination. 2017 as a whole for film killed it. It was shown no Oscar love whatsoever? Let me repeat that complaint for the omission of The Florida Project.
Armie Hammer and Timothèe Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name.
The Oscars are telecast on ABC that evening.
