THE inaugural UEFA Nations League draw is taking place today.
USMNT impact? For his entire tenure as national team coach, Jurgen Klinsmann insisted that the United States of America play as many friendly games against strong European competition as possible.
The Nations League features all 55 of Europe's national teams divided into four divisions - Leagues A to D - that are themselves split into four groups, to be played between September and November. It's unclear if teams will schedule normal friendlies on the other dates or just leave them open.
League A, Group 1 is awesome: Germany, France and the Netherlands. Belgium, Switzerland and Iceland are slotted into Group 2.
The winners of the groups in the top tier - League A, which includes England's group - progress to the Final Four, a kind of play-offs event consisting of semis and a final.
The fixture dates will be announced at a later date.
Promotion would mean a return to the very top levels of the European game, but relegation would put the team that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finalists back in the equivalent of the third division.
Hungary are the top ranked team in League C at the moment; that's all you need to about the quality of games coming up here.
"We've got some friendly games coming up now", said O'Neill. We can play more positive football, we're going to try and play more attacking football and hopefully it results in goals and also victories and points. "It's good for our development of football, and hopefully for fans so that they can celebrate a few times for their teams", he added.
Pot 2: Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg.
Country coefficients and the World Cup qualifying helped determine which nations would be drawn into the four different leagues - A, B, C, D. This is dubbed the Final Four showpiece and consists of two semi-finals, a third-place play-off and the final to determine the victor of the first ever Uefa Nations League.
Miss out on the Euros through the traditional qualifiers and then group winners go into one of the four, four-team play-offs in March 2020, with one to go through to the finals.
