Mayfield is among the NFL's top 2018 quarterback prospects stemming from his achievements at Oklahoma that include winning the 2017 Heisman Trophy and leading the Sooners into last season's FBS playoffs.
Both of them were also arrested in college and have a reputation for being brash and cocky. And, they both like to show emotion on the field and flaunt some of their fun off the field. Then there's Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, the 2017 Heisman Trophy award victor who is clearly a work in progress when it comes to working from under center, but, as advertised, has a knack to catch your eye over and over with his athleticism and his throwing ability.
"Training is what it is, working hard to test well", said Mayfield after the North team's first practice. "It took me a little bit to mentally go out there and play ball".
In other words, starting on the practice field on Tuesday, it's Game On in this quarterback derby.
Mayfield provided the reason for his tardiness-his mother, whom he says was hospitalized, so he flew home to be with her.
Allen said the pressure of being the No. 1 overall pick wouldn't change the pressure he has always put on himself to be great. Mayfield's late arrival (family emergency) was treated like the Beatles' first trip to NY, with screaming throngs of fans - and a big section of NFL Draft media - proclaiming the coronation of the would-be king. "I have enough confidence in myself that I can play at a high level at all the positions".
There likely are only three top-20 first-round picks in the game, which will be played Saturday. He has the measurables, coming in at a shade under 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds at Tuesday's weigh-in. It wasn't about delaying measuring.
"All that stuff is not a big deal, but when we met with him, what we wanted to know is if he thought it was a big deal".
"Well, I would think we would probably not do that, " he said. He can start by not providing legitimacy to a silly tweet questioning his integrity and let it roll off his back. He completed a modest 56.3 percent of his passes for 1,812 yards and 16 touchdowns with six interceptions.
"Football is everything", he said.
"They asked me how I learn better. It's truly fantastic and I'm just so thankful for this situation and want to make the most of it". And get these numbers: Phillips had a team-best 103 tackles for the Cardinal in 2017 - 103 tackles for an interior defensive lineman - and 17 of those were for a loss. "It's all the things that come with it".
Smith said he's been in touch with a handful of National Football League teams, as they try to get to know Smith more, pick his brain about the game and other background information.
"I think it's a clear advantage to have a chance to coach this game, to watch those kids in meetings, to watch them in practice and to watch them in install meetings to see how they react to information, " Joseph said.
"Training is what it is", he said.
