Alpine skiing: American women ponder life beyond Vonn

At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Vonn won gold in the downhill and bronze in the super-G. Her last podium finish in a World Cup combined event - races that aren't contested as regularly on the elite global tour - was in 2015.

"It's incredible to be on the podium with two such awesome skiers", Gisin said.

The luge and skeleton events have far more danger and excitement involved than nearly anything else at the games, and they're hardly ever on TV.

The result leaves Shiffrin, who grew up in Lyme, N.H., with two medals from these Games after her gold in giant slalom.

Gisin's victory was confirmed when the United States' Lindsey Vonn, the leader after the downhill segment, failed to finish her slalom run.

Lindsey Vonn: The greatest hits is really just my right knee-two ACLs, MCL, meniscus, broken my wrist, my thumb, my pinkie, just a couple of random broken bones, but mostly is-oh, my ankle. One absentee from the morning's racing was Italy's newly-crowned downhill champion Sofia Goggia, a close friend of Vonn's.

US women's ski team speed coach Chip White said he was upbeat following Wednesday's race.

The next-and final-Alpine skiing race is the team event, which is scheduled for Friday at 9 p.m. ET.

If she did return, she would be 37 while competing in the 2022 Games, which will be held in Beijing.

American ski star Lindsey Vonn finished the women's downhill competition in Pyeongchang with a bronze medal around her neck and her emotions on her sleeve.

Vonn was considered the favorite to win Wednesday.

In the aftermath of Thursday's race, with the Pyeongchang Olympics entering its final weekend, Vonn and Shiffrin were each trying to take measure of their experience here.

I would like to come back to what I said after my race at the Olympic Games today in PyeongChang.

The fifth skier to take the course, Goggia gave a shrug of her shoulders soon after finishing in a time of one minute, 39.22 seconds.

"It's so exciting. It's insane I really thought it's so hard to ski so fast in slalom", Gisin told reporters.

"I'm in a really good place in my career now", Shiffrin said Thursday afternoon.

She is now the oldest woman to win an Olympic medal in Alpine skiing.

Vonn was the first USA female alpine skier to win in all five World Cup disciplines, reach 50 World Cup victories and the first US skier, male or female, to win four overall World Cup titles.

If Vonn does need a second season to get past Stenmark's record she might think about extending her career.

Her immediate future is undecided, but she says Beijing 2022 may just be too far. In the end, the Austrian snowboarder changed her planned trick and was rewarded with the first Olympic gold medal in the event.

But she was overwhelmed when she met a group of South Korean men who wanted to show their gratitude for her grandad's war efforts after he passed away in November.
