Canada will go home with only one of a possible three medals in curling from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, a shocking result for a country that has dominated the podium for the last 20 years.
Their opponent is quite the surprise.
Canada had won gold in three of the past four Olympics, but the first year without National Hockey League players on the Canadian roster meant Team Canada's chances to win it all this year were less optimistic.
Rooney, who played her senior year of high school in Andover, Minnesota, on the boys' varsity team, was the goalie in net for each of the three US victories over Canada in pre-Olympic play. Germany last medaled in 1976, and has never won gold.
"Who knows? Who knows?"
Roy made it 4-3 at 9:42 on the power play, sending a shot in from the side that hit a body in front and beat German goaltender Danny aus den Birken. "If we keep fighting like this, we have nothing to lose".
He sees every Olympic hockey tournament as an opportunity to win gold no matter who shows up.
US coach Robb Stauber went with the 20-year-old Rooney in net for the biggest game of her career, but she was the goalie for each of the three games the Americans beat Canada last fall during their pre-Olympic exhibition tour, including Four Nations Cup title in November.
Ryan Hayes, an American fan dressed as Uncle Sam at the figure skating competition, said there had been "hits and misses" for the U.S. at the Olympics.
"He's been our best player this tournament", Grigorenko said.
Speed skater Heather Bergsma, another American heavily fancied for gold, finished well outside the medal places in all three of her individual events.
For now, the Germans have capitalized in their biggest win yet after knocking off top-seeded Sweden.
"It's as disappointing as it gets right there", said Robinson. It also won bronze in 1932. "That's why it's the greatest day in German hockey".
The first period ended in a draw, with both squads focusing on defense.
The small final between Canada and Switzerland will be played on Friday.
"I'm proud of our team, and proud to be counted among the Canadian athletes who have won medals at these Games".
WATCH; Fans of Team Canada were obviously disappointed as they left the Men's Hockey semifinal game against Germany, but many remained confident that Canada could still clinch bronze.
The curling world was left nearly speechless early Thursday morning when the US men defeated Canada to not only advance to its first gold medal game in the sport, but also force Canada to settle for the bronze medal game for the first time since curling returned to the Olympics in 1998.
