But Schuster came through with this flawless shot to give his team a 10-5 lead with only two ends left to play. The Canadians jumped in front of the Germans on Friday by winning three medals, including gold and silver in the women's freestyle skiing ski cross big final, but they missed out on a huge and expected chance at a podium finish in curling, where the men's team was surprisingly swept off by Switzerland in the bronze medal match.

On top of that, four of those athletes won a grand total of seven medals. The Americans - Nagasu, Bradie Tennell and Karen Chen - were never in a position to medal as they finished in the middle of the field in 9th, 10th and 11th place, respectively.

For Olympic figure skaters, the individual events are the peak of their competition.

Despite the fact that she's primarily a snowboarder, the Czech Republic's Ester Ledecká beat out seasoned skiers like America's Lindsay Vonn and Austria's Anna Veith to win gold in the women's super-G race. They won USA's first ever gold in cross-country skiing, as well as the first medal in the sport since 1976.

While a lot of attention was paid to slopestyle silver and bronze medallists Max Parrot and Mark McMorris, it was fellow Canadian Sébastien Toutant who won the inaugural Olympic big air gold.

But where just a few days earlier USA Today and others had been fretting, the newspaper was now celebrating the hockey triumph as "one of the most satisfying moments in US Olympic history". The 18-year-old is now the first Asian skater to make a podium finish in the men's 1,500m distance in the Winter Olympics.

South Korean cross-country skier Kim Magnus competes in the men's 50km mass start at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics at Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, on February 24, 2018.

The Olympic champion was Korean Lee Seung-Hoon, previously won at home Games silver in the team race. More than that, the US finished on the podium in every Olympic Games from 1952 to 2006 (with the exception of 1964).

"It's the first competition and at home", Lee said after crying on the medal stand, according to the Associated Press.

The tally of 37 won by the United States at Vancouver in 2010 was the previous record but the victory over France by time differential in the "small" final at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre allowed the Norwegians to surpass it.

When Meyers Taylor and her teammate, brakeman Lauren Gibbs, won silver Wednesday night in Pyeongchang, Taylor joined Steven Holcomb and Patrick Martin as one of the most decorated U.S. Olympic bobsledders-they each have won three medals. Bowe is another American Olympian who brought back a medal. But unfortunately for winter sports fans, all Olympics must come to an end.

"It's very humbling", Nestvold-Haugen said.
