Purdue Drops a Heartbreaker to Ohio State

Michael Briggs: When Michigan State welcomes Purdue to the Breslin Center on Saturday, the Spartans will play their first ranked team since November 30, when they hosted then-No. However, they must first avoid a letdown tonight as they take on a struggling Iowa team. Big key wins could also have the line being a inflated.

Purdue (23-4, 12-2) has now lost back-to-back games after winning 19 straight in the middle of the season.

Purdue led much of the day on the road, avoiding mistakes with its first turnover coming almost 30 minutes into the game. Purdue's Vincent Edwards missed the front end of a one and one with 2.4 seconds left, trailing by three. Bates-Diop tops in rebounds with 9.0 while Jackson leads in assists with 4.2 per game.

Despite a shot-clock violation on its last possession of the half, Ohio State took a 42-32 lead into the break.

Carsen Edwards was the only other Boiler in double figures with 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting.

Holtmann made a point to tell Musa Jallow to shoot more confidently against Purdue. Wesson was one of the biggest reasons for the OSU victory.

However, the Spartans' 12 points through three matches were tops in the East, edging Penn State by 1.5 points, giving MSU a spot in the championship match vs. the West's top team, Purdue. He finished one away from his career high with 25 points and shot 12-for-22, a career high for field goal attempts.

If Bridges can continue making big plays, Michigan State has the potential to beat the best teams in college basketball.

The Hawkeyes (12-15 overall, 3-11 Big Ten) reverted to turning the ball over, playing poor defense and coming apart as a team. Despite shooting 9-20 from three-point land, the Hawkeyes only hit 63.2 percent of their free throws. The 42 first-half points were the most for the Buckeyes since they had 44 against Maryland on January 11, nine games ago. Miles Bridges goes off for 20 points and the game-winning three. In a game where three of the five Spartan starters weren't at their best, the bench stepped up and led the Spartans to a top five win. Winston has doubled his points per game this year, and averages seven assists per contest. The second time around, though, coach Matt Painter said they wouldn't be blaming themselves. Maybe more important, he hustled around screens and played tireless defense against one of the country's most risky shooting teams. Four hours north, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan, Michigan State closed out a win over Purdue, leaving the Buckeyes alone atop the Big Ten standings pending their result against the Hawkeyes.

That's where they are after Keita Bates-Diop had 14 points and eight rebounds in No. 14 Ohio State's 82-64 victory over Iowa on Saturday. It was a total team effort and a really good way to start the spring. They had undergone a coaching change in June with long-time coach Thad Matta abruptly departing and Chris Holtmann being brought in from Butler to replace him.

"This is our third top five game of the year, us versus Duke, us versus Notre Dame and now us versus Purdue".
