Kiara students celebrate International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD) is being observed since the early 1900's.

Peter Kagwanja is former Adviser Government of Kenya (2008-2013) and now the President and Chief Executive of the Africa Policy Institute.

Achim Steiner is Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme.

MSI data from 2017 indicates that men earned a median gross hourly salary of Rs231, while women earned only Rs184.8.

Where laws exist, they are often ignored, and women who pursue legal redress are doubted, denigrated and dismissed.

It's been more than 100 years since we first talked about this, yet it is noteworthy that we need an occasion to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.

Right from the WhatsApp jokes to movies, women are shown as shopping addicts while men are the poor souls bank-rolling their bills. Women celebrate the day by conducting parties and dinners.

However, progress towards gender parity is regressing. Women are twice as likely as men (29 per cent versus 16 per cent) to have felt discouraged from applying for a job or a promotion because of their gender, and four in 10 women (44 per cent) say that they have had to change their behaviour to appear more authoritative in the workplace.

"Almost all women would love to constantly upgrade their wardrobe, with the latest clothes and accessories in trend, own the latest gadgets etc". The wage gap between Indian men and women is amongst the worst in the world, says a report by Oxfam.

AROUND the world, gender bias is attracting renewed attention.

"I have seven-year-old twin daughters and I truly hope that as the world continues to change and get smaller, the opportunities that are open to them in whatever area they choose are exciting, fulfilling and genuinely open to everyone, regardless of gender".

"The potential benefits from women's economic empowerment are significant".

If you've already read about or discussed a few influential women from the past or present, making popsicle stick puppets can be a fun crafts project to tackle at the end of the day. Notable Kenya's new female cabinet secretaries hold commanding posts traditionally reserved for males, including the Ministries of Defence, Public Service, Foreign Affairs, Health, Education and Lands. Many activists within global and Latin American women's movements credit the United Nations and its declarations and conferences for improvements in women's rights and addressing gender discrimination.

Participation of women in electoral politics is still low. The aboriginal female population grew by 20 percent between 2006 and 2011, and could increase to between 987,000 and 1,316,000 by 2036. The world can not afford to wait that long; we need a new approach.

As part of International Women's Day, Siemens Healthineers in Swords are organising a collection for Aoibhneas, a women's and children refuge located in Coolock. Twice Parliament has declined to pass the Bill.

Now, more than ever, we must remain firm in our commitment to gender equality, and we must do all we can to remove any barriers to women's success. "A whole of government and whole of society approach must become our new norm".
